Split system air conditioners have a power rating that helps you select the correct split system for your needs.
Below is an estimate of coverage you can expect from some commonly sized split-systems:
Rated Cooling | Coverage |
2.6kW | 10-18sqm |
5.2kW | 28-40m |
7.0kW | 30-42sqm |
8.0kW | 35-45sqm |
Each of these sizes has a coverage range. This range is due to the four main factors that affect cooling. You can read more about these factors through the following Australian Government YourHome resource:
Split systems do not have a fixed coverage size because of these factors.
As an example, consider two rooms of the same size:
- One room located in a tropical climate that lets in a lot of sunlight during summer, has poor insulation, and has not been sealed properly
- One room located in a cool temperate climate, that does not let in a lot of sunlight during summer, has the highest standard of insulation and has been designed to be extremely airtight
These two rooms have significantly different cooling requirements, despite being the same size.
Consider how well your home has been designed in terms of energy efficiency. If it has not been designed with energy efficiency in mind, you may wish to consider having a professional install roofing insulation or double or triple glazed windows in conjunction with installing a split system. These modifications can reduce the size of the split system you need, and can reduce your power bill requirements, which can save you money and reduce your carbon footprint.
Once you have considered the size of your room and the factors mentioned previously, you can use the table above to estimate the rated cooling you will need.
