Fitness trackers and smartwatches are designed with materials that are comfortable and safe for use on your skin, even during exercise.
Despite this, skin irritation can occur in rare cases, especially if you do not usually wear a fitness tracker or smartwatch, so please ensure that you follow these tips to prevent this:
- The unit should not be loose, but should not be tight either, this will allow your heart rate sensor to give accurate readings whilst still being comfortable.
- If you wear the unit for long periods, switch the unit to your other wrist for a couple of days to prevent irritation.
- Regular exposure to moisture will increase the likelihood of irritation. Make sure to clean and dry your unit appropriately to prevent this.
- Anything that is applied to the skin, for example, moisturizer, bug spray and sunscreen, will increase the likelihood of irritation. If your device comes into contact with these skin products regularly, you may use a small amount of rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth to remove any excess.
If you have carried out these steps and you are still experiencing discomfort, it is very important to cease using your fitness tracker immediately. Make sure your device is thoroughly clean, and do not attempt to use the unit until your skin has completely healed and you have consulted a dermatologist.
